Arizona Voters not Fooled by Fancy Rhetoric

November 5th, 2008 · No Comments · Legislation Affecting Real Estate, Political

Welcome back!

I am very proud of Arizona Voters today as they hit the polls yesterday able to vote intelligently on the issues affecting us. In particular I was concerned over a couple of propositions that were worded to deceive the public into thinking they were getting something they were not. In this year of skepticism, however, voters managed to cut right through the smoke and mirrors and gave resounding decisions on these propositions.

Deceptive Propositions

As a Realtor, one of my pet peeves was Proposition 201, deceptively named the Homeowners’ Bill of Rights. This one would have cost us a lot of money and I’m glad that the people recognized this fact. This proposition was voted down by 78%.

Another deceptive proposition was Prop 202, deceptively named Stop Illegal Hiring. This proposition would have actually assisted the employers who hire illegals and would not have protected citizens or those who are here legally.  The Payday Loan Reform Act, Prop 200, was another one of these tricky propositions.  While it would have made some reforms, it also allowed payday loans to remain in existence after 2010, their current drop dead date.  It looks like voters are choosing to force them to go out of business or perhaps reform their rates if they’d like to remain in Arizona.

How did we Vote?

Here’s a list of the 2008 Arizona Propositions and how we voted. Please note that there are a few votes still outstanding, but not enough to affect the outcome of most of these.  Proposition 101 is the only proposition whose outcome may change as the remaining votes are counted.  The highlighted propositions are those especially affecting homeowners and I am delighted with the outcomes on both of those propositions.  Way to go, Arizona!!
